UPDATE: Plans to address water damage at KIS

December 29, 2022

Dear Kenston Families,

While this directly impacts Kenston Intermediate School families, I want to keep everyone up-to-date on what has occurred since the pipes burst at KIS due to freezing temperatures, the subsequent thaw, and the plans moving forward.

When the pipes burst, there was significant damage to the 5th grade hallway and classrooms. While other parts of the building did not sustain damage, to make the necessary repairs, we need to close Kenston Intermediate School.

Therefore, as of today the decision has been made to close Kenston Intermediate School for students and utilize four (4) calamity days, with classes resuming for 4th and 5th grade students on Monday, January 9, 2023, unlike the rest of the district. At this time, no additional classwork will be assigned to these students. We will continue to keep you apprised of any changes.

Since Tuesday, highly trained restoration specialists and our maintenance staff have addressed the water removal and begun clean up. This coming weekend, the damaged carpet will be removed, and the floors will be prepped to install the new carpeting.

Next week the plan is for all ceiling tiles to be removed and replaced. New carpet will be installed, and all furniture returned to the classrooms. The multipurpose room is the staging area while classrooms have been emptied so that these renovations can occur. As part of the insurance claim, we will also be addressing the replacement of 5th grade student supplies and educational materials.

This is our Plan A. We are also working on additional contingency plans to get our students and staff safely back to school as quickly as possible. I will keep you posted on any changes to this schedule, as we may need to adjust based on various factors.

This is certainly different from how we want to begin 2023. So again, I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your support, patience, and understanding. We look forward to getting our students and staff back into the classroom as quickly and safely as possible.

We will continue to keep you updated on any changes in this plan.

Sincerely,

Steven A. Sayers

Superintendent
