OPINION: Pep Assembly a Welcomed Return to Tradition

Finally, Kenston High School is having a pep assembly.

KHS has not had an assembly since January of 2020 and has not had a pep rally since the fall of 2019

Bringing all the students and staff together and finally having a “normal” high school event is very needed.

Covid-19 has deprived students and staff of the “normal school life” over the past years. It made classes much harder when the school went virtual in the spring of 2020. It also made the school day less enjoyable last year when students were carrying shields, wearing masks, eating spaced out in the cafeteria, and following other school mandates.

Pep assemblies are basically the culture that is KHS. There is so much school spirit and passion in this school and in all of the students, especially when we have these assemblies. Many students at KHS missed all of the assemblies and many field trips such as going to art museums or the zoo.

Last semester, I was in Mr. Turks’ Geology of National Parks class, but we were unable to go on the rock climbing field trip like students had prior to Covid

Assemblies and field trips really bring us students together to have fun, but also to learn. I think it’s kind of ironic that these past years are when we needed to come together the most, but couldn’t until now because of Covid.

I’m happy to say that life is slowly turning back to normal — getting a little better day by day.

Desk shields are no more and masks are now optional as the mandates and restrictions begin to disappear. Now, in the last months of the 2021-22 school year, we are having a pep assembly to get our school spirit back and to leave 2022 on a good note.▮
