‘Out West Trip’ Going East

The Kenston Field Experience is returning in 2022 — but with a new destination.

The “Out West Trip,” which typically occurs every two years, will now stay on the East Coast, a welcomed compromise for students who have waited since the trip’s cancellation due to Covid in 2020.

Science teacher Mr. Brian Turk, who usually organizes the trip that includes hiking, rock climbing, and camping, decided to change the destination of the field experience due to safety concerns.

“We decided to be a little more conservative with the current climate of Covid,” said Mr. Turk.

Mammoth Cave, The Great Smokies, and The New River Gorge are just a few of the new locations the group will be visiting.

What is usually a 24-day trip is now shortened to two weeks, and staying on the East Coast allows students to be “a little closer to home” according to Mr. Turk.

Mr. Turk says the group is excited for the change and also excited to finally get back to the field experience. The new locations will provide a new experience for students and for the faculty who usually attend.

“We’ve never done an East Coast trip before,” said Mr. Turk.

But even with all of the changes, the requirements to attend the field experience remain the same. Students must have completed either geology, physical science, or biology, and because it’s a field trip experience, there is a tuition fee.

Spots are limited and applications must be turned in by Tuesday, Nov. 23.
