Kenston junior diver Mary O’Neill was 18.65 points out of the lead and 12.95 points out of second place entering the ninth of 11 rounds during the Division I sectional diving competition last Thursday at Solon High School.

The host Lady Comet divers owned the top two spots with senior defending champion Sidney O’Donnell and junior Tara Fitzgerald. But Kenston’s O’Neill had higher degrees of difficulty on her final three dives and was gearing to score a lifetime best.

Hitting her front 1 1/2 somersault with one twist for 45.10 points, her inward 1 1/2 from the pike position for 54.00 points and her inward double tuck for 54.60 points, O’Neill threw the hammer down to break her own school record with 470.15 points for the sectional crown. She was the only flyer in competition to record a 50-plus-point dive.

Solon’s Fitzgerald finished runner-up with 463.80 points and O’Donnell took third with 459.15 points, while Lady Comet sophomores Abby Wilkov, 381.95 points, and Lydia Poduska, 365.40 points, finished fourth and fifth. And Kenston sophomore Courtney Keane finished sixth with 283.60 points to punch her ticket to districts.

The girls Division I Northeast District diving competition is at 11:30 a.m. this Thursday at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium.

In the pool, meanwhile, Kenston senior Sofija Raudins defended her sectional title in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.70, winning the race by 5.39 seconds, during Division I swimming competition on Saturday at the Spire Institute in Geneva.

Earlier in the meet, Raudins finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 25.33 seconds.

Sophomore Leilah Shafer and junior Mandy Glime also advanced to districts in both of their individual events for Kenston.

Shafer finished third in both the 50 freestyle, 25.22 seconds, and the 100 freestyle, 55.44 seconds, while Glime took fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.48 and 10th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.12.

Also advancing in individual events for the Lady Bombers, senior Kate Stavnicky finished fifth in the 500 freestyle in 5:40.96, junior Claire Nidy took seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.68 and senior Haleigh Shafer was 12th in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.12.

The Kenston girls also qualified two relays to the Division I Northeast District swim meet at 12 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium.

In the 200 medley relay, the elder Shafer, 30.64 seconds, breaststroker Raudins, 30.69, junior butterflier Ellie Mills, 29.13, and the younger Shafer, 25.18, clocked a 1:55.64 to finish runners-up to Mayfield’s quartet that broke an 8-year-old meet record in 1:48.24.

And in the 200 freestyle relay, Kenston’s team of sophomore Emily Evans, 27.67 seconds, Raudins, 25.26, the elder Shafer, 26.66, and the younger Shafer, 25.26, finished sixth in 1:44.85.

The Solon girls, meanwhile, also advanced two relays as well as six swimmers in individual events.

Leading the Lady Comet torpedoes at sectionals, senior Taylor Shene finished sixth in the 50 freestyle in 25.45 seconds and fifth in the 100 freestyle in 56.06 seconds.

Sophomore Amy Zhang took sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.64.

Sophomore Rilie Szach finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.91.

Freshman Irene Chang was 12th in the 200 individual medley in 2:25.59.

And sophomore Alexis DiMatteo took 13th in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.69, while freshman Bridget Ferris finished 14th in 2:07.14.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Solon’s quartet of Zhang, 26.78 seconds, DiMatteo, 26.06, Szach, 26.70, and Shene, 25.29, finished fifth in a season-best 1:44.83.
