With five different shooters providing low scores during the dual season, the Kenston boys golf team turned in a steady set of cards to finish third at the Division I sectional tournament on Monday at the Windmill Lakes Golf Club’s par-70 course in Ravenna.
The Kenston boys produced a pair of 81-stroke rounds and a pair of 83-stroke rounds for 328 strokes among their top four linksters, bested only by champion Walsh Jesuit, 316 strokes, and runner-up North Royalton, 324 strokes, in the 14-team, 72-golfer field.
None of the Bombers would have advanced to districts as individuals.
Senior Emmett Weil and junior Nate Fisher fired 81s to finish 10th overall, while seniors Ernie Manke and Nathan Wasinski shot 83s to finish 19th. Bomber junior Sean Kukolec provided a solid fifth score of 88 strokes.
The Bombers shed six strokes off their eighth-place team finish from a year ago, despite graduating three players – Weil and Fisher are the postseason returners from 2016.
Fisher, in particular, teed off from the back nine and was on fire with 37 strokes, 2 over par, on that half of the course on Monday.
The Kenston boys compiled a 12-2 record in the regular season this fall and finished runners-up in the Western Reserve Conference, with Weil shooting a 77 and Fisher a 78 during the league tournament on Sept. 20 at Quail Hollow Country Club’s par-71 course in Concord, where the Bombers carded 324 strokes as a team.
Up next, Kenston will compete in the 20-team Division I Northeast District tournament at 9 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Pine Hills Golf Club’s par-71 course in Hinkley. The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to states.
The last time a Kenston Boy’s Golf Team advanced on to the District Tournament was 2001! To put that in perspective, Adam Farrell (sophomore) a member of this year’s varsity team was not even born. The Bombers captured third at Monday’s Sectional Tournament at Windmill Lakes Golf Club with a balanced effort which has been… Continue Reading
