“Man’s Best Friend” is known by most to be the dog, the animal with a broad variety of breeds, ranging from Chiwawas to Great Danes. Given the dog is the most popular pet in America (TheNest.com), some households will unsurprisingly have more than one dog. Many dog owners will love their four-legged friends as they would a child, as an actual member of the family. This level of affection leads to debates between multitudes of owners regarding whose dog is better – but how do we determine this?
Common points dog owners will debate include topics such as obedience, intelligence, and simply how cute they are. The problem with this type of argument is heavily opinionated, and almost always biased. Consequently, dog owners need other ways to determine whose dog is better received by the general American public, and this is what brings us to the American Kennel Club’s late March posting of the 2018 “Most Popular Dog Breeds – Full Ranking List”. According to the AKC, the top five most popular dog breeds among American owners in 2018 were:
1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd
3. Golden Retriever
4. French Bulldog
5. English Bulldog
While the general popularity can not be the only indicator of which dog is best among all, it does demonstrate the public’s favorite, presumably for the general dependability and good health of the top three listed.
According to Brock Dicillo, “My jack russell terrier places 6th on the AKC’s list”. Brock was off by seventy-two places, with the Jack Russell Terrier actually at spot #78 on the list. Ironically, his other dog, a beagle, places #6 on the same list.
