Senior Captains, Coaches Excited For First Official Varsity Season

On February 20, 2017, the Boys Lacrosse team begins their first official varsity season, as they were deemed district-sanctioned by the Board of Education this fall. However, before the day the program became a district-sponsored sport, senior captains Simon Coughlin and Brandon Wenger have constantly made sure that the rest of their team are getting themselves ready (physically and mentally) for what has the potential to be a spectacular season.

Both captains have made sure that not only the senior fall practices were available throughout the fall, but also that said practices were better than ever.

“[The program’s] timing in becoming [fully] sanctioned is fitting as we sport a very talented cast with a bad taste in our mouth,” Coughlin says in regards to the program being sponsored by the district. “Springing from the ashes of a disappointing season, we have come out with a rejuvenated culture in lieu of the preseason workouts…To this point, most of us have been putting in the necessary work to allow our talents to come to fruition, but a long road ahead awaits us. With 19 returning letter winners, most of whom have been valiant contributors and some prospective newcomers, we are tooled to make a run, but what will ultimately control our success is the culture of our team and the commitment/desire from each individual.”

With the addition of the incredible eight weeks of fall practices the boys have had, the annual winter workouts have been extremely successful for those who are determined to make an impact this season.

“I feel that we have had a better turn out in terms of players compared to last year,” Wenger comments in regards to the turnouts in both the winter conditioning and the captains practices.

This is great to see people coming out to get into shape for this season. This is a huge season for not only our seniors but our whole team. I love seeing our players come out and put the work in to get ready for the season”. This year will be a great for the program, as this will be the first time that the team not only has an amazing group of seniors and juniors (which is rare by itself), but also has an extremely good freshman and sophomore class as well. “This is the best team that we have had in Kenston Lacrosse history,” Wenger, the two time letter winner, says.

Even though the players are extremely excited for the upcoming season, seven year head coach Jay Lammers is equally excited, if not more.

“I am extremely excited that the Board of Education has adopted Boys Lacrosse as an officially sanctioned school sport,” Lammers states. “The coaching staff looks forward to our first spring leading a fully fledged varsity team in reaching unprecedented success for Kenston on the lacrosse field. I know the athletes that have treated lacrosse as a varsity sport over the years are just as hungry to prove that our game is more than an activity at Kenston and can’t wait to be a great source of pride for Bomber Athletics this spring and beyond”.

The boys kick off their first game of the season at home against cross-town rival Chagrin Falls on March 17.
